Recipe Friday – Velvet Green Smoothie with Beets

Velvet Green Smoothie

Velvet Smoothie 2

While growing up, my mom always told me that eating beets would make my cheeks rosy. I would eat a bunch of beets and my mom would remark how rosy my cheeks looked! I would then run to the mirror, only to find that my cheeks looked pretty much the same to me, but I always pretended to believe it. Overall, it didn’t matter because I really liked beets anyway.

Fast forward many years later…and I learned that my mom wasn’t too far off from beets giving me rosy cheeks either! Beets have so many benefits! They purifying the blood, cleanse the liver, lower blood pressure and improve blood flow and deliver oxygen to areas of your body that need it. Tada! They possibly could help to make rosier cheeks! In addition to all of that, they help to boost your energy, replenish iron, are rich in anti-oxidants that help to fight cancer and reduce inflammation and contain betaine and trytophan, which helps fight depression and relaxes that mind.

Today’s smoothie not only features beets, but it also has a hint of chocolate as is found in red velvet cake. We got the recipe from rootandrevel.com and it was so smooth and delicious, we wanted to share it with you.

BONE UP GREEN SMOOTHIE

Getting enough calcium into your diet can be a challenge, especially for women. Women generally require anywhere between 1000 mg to 1300 mg per day, as we age. For years, most of us believed that milk and other dairy products was the best way to get calcium. However, we now know that this is a myth. The high protein levels in dairy products create an acidic environment that make the calcium difficult to absorb.

Green smoothies are alkalizing and a great way to help absorb minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and manganese. All of these minerals are important for healthy bones.

This Bone Up Green Smoothie will give you over half your required daily intake of calcium! It is also great for post workout since it also helps to stave off hunger and restore energy, electrolytes and glycogen stores.

Ingredients

  • 2 C kale or spinach
  • 1 C almond milk or coconut milk
  • 1 frozen banana chopped into 1” pieces and
  • ½ cucumber chopped
  • 2 pitted dates
  • 2 T flax seeds

Method

  • Blend kale and almond milk until smooth.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until creamy.
  • Add more milk or filtered water if you prefer a thinner smoothie.

Enjoy!

So Fresh and So Clean

Clean Eating has been our theme this year and now that our Spring Detox is over, we have more tips to guide you and help you feed your body with fresh, sustainable, plant based foods. Our belief is that beauty starts from within and nourishing and protecting your skin begins with the foods that you put in your body.

That said, we don’t expect you to lead a life without indulgences. Life is about balance and while we encourage you to choose whole, organic, foods as much as possible, we expect that you will treat yourself on occasion too.

Here are some tips to follow after your detox:

  1. Continue to eat organic, whole foods and avoid processed food. – Try to set a goal for yourself, such as eating 80% whole foods. We think of it as making 8 out of the 10 items on your plate whole food based.
  1. Keep drinking water to keep toxins flushing out of your system. – We love adding lemon for the many benefits not to mention yummy flavor!
  1. Stimulate your natural detoxification system with daily exercise. – Even if you just make time in your day for 15-30 minutes, your body will thank you!
  1. Drink an alkalizing smoothie everyday! – We love to start our days with an alkalizing smoothie. All those veggies and fruits you’ve been eating have changed your body to have a healthy alkaline environment that is less susceptible to disease and aging! A double whammy!!
