Oil of Oregano – The Natural Antibiotic
A couple of years ago, after suffering with a really bad cold, one of the aestheticians asked if we ever used oregano oil as a natural antibiotic. She went on to say that even though she is in the profession of being in direct contact with so many different people everyday she rarely got the colds that everyone else passes around since she began taking oregno oil! So, our interest was piqued for sure!
Since then, we’ve been taking it and found that it really is like Liquid Gold and wanted to share it with you in time for cold season! It can be used effectively in your everyday life and we think that you should use it too!
How does it work?
Oregano oil contains two powerful compounds of carvacrol and thymol that have powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. These compounds break down the outer layer that protects the bacteria, virus or fungus from your immune system.
How to use it?
Hand Sanitizer: Combine 10 drops of oregano oil with two tablespoons of coconut oil. Rub it into your hands as a natural hand sanitizer. If you choose to use it this way, be careful, you might be craving Italian!
For Children and Babies: Rub oregano oil directly onto the palms of the feet. If there are any rashes or open cuts, dilute the oregano oil in carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil before applying.
Internally: It’s always best to take oregano oil 3 times a day rather than all at once. It can be placed, undiluted, under the tongue, but we tried it and it tastes terrible alone! So, we found that it is best if you dilute it. Here is our favorite wellness shooter.
Wellness Shooter with Oregano
- 1-2 drops of Oil of Oregano
- ½ cup Almond Milk
- 1 T coconut oil
- 1 inch of ginger
- Honey (optional)
Put everything into a blender and blend. Drink 2-3 times a day. If on the go, triple the recipe and make several shooters to take with you and drink throughout the day!
Note: Make sure to drink a lot of water throughout the day especially when taking oregano oil. The water helps to flush your system of the toxins that may occur from the oil killing off bacteria, viruses, or fungus.
Words of caution!
- If you are taking blood thinning drugs, oil of oregano acts similarly in thinning the blood. If you take oregano oil with blood thinning drugs your blood pressure may drop too low and you blood may become too thin.
- Oil of Oregano is not recommended during pregnancy and if breastfeeding, a note of caution that your baby may not like the flavor.
