HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES WHEN DINING OUT
We’ve all been there. We eat healthy at home and prepare all of our lunches for work and then, suddenly we find ourselves at a restaurant and we have no idea what to order.
Remember, restaurants are in the business of selling you food and enticing your taste buds. They aren’t trying to make “clean” foods for your healthy way of eating. So how do you stay social and eat out while trying to eat clean? Here are our tips:
- CHOOSE THE RESTAURANT CAREFULLY
If you can, try to choose a restaurant that you know will have some healthy choices. This way you can think about what you will order and plan ahead.
- READ THE MENU BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
The sight and smell of the food can persuade you into making unhealthy choices. If you go in with a plan and choose your food ahead of time, it’s easier to avoid making choices you may regret later.
- EAT SOMETHING HEALTHY BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
It is more difficult to avoid eating the pre-meal snacks, like bread or chips, if you arrive hungry. It’s a good idea to eat something healthy like a banana or yogurt before you get to the restaurant.
- DRINK A GLASS OF WATER AS SOON AS YOU ARE SEATED
Drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before your meal helps with digestion and helps to reduce your calorie intake.
- FIND OUT HOW THINGS ARE COOKED
Choose foods that are steamed, grilled, roasted or poached. Ask what sauce or marinade is used and see if you can order it on the side.
- ASK FOR MORE VEGGIES
Pay attention to the sides that are served with your entrée and swap them out for a salad or steamed vegetables when possible.
- REMEMBER YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL
It is important to think about your whole diet and what your health goals are. If your goal is to eat “whole foods” that are not processed or filled with refined sugars, then keep that in mind when ordering. If you find yourself unable to avoid a fast food restaurant. Don’t panic! Again, it’s all about being prepared. If you are following a special diet, urbantastebud.com has a list of menus at many fast food restaurants. If the fast food restaurant is not on this list, you can still get ideas of how to order your specialized diet from the other menus.
Don’t stress about eating out. Just make sure to do your research ahead of time. And if you do end up cheating on your diet, remember, one cheat meal won’t kill you. Just try to be better prepared next time.
